Means Museum of European Cultures when translated his English, this museum is a collection of everyday items in the growing European cultures from the 18th century till the present day. With over 285,000 exhibits, the Museum of European Cultures is one of the largest institutions of its kind. The collections intersect with the Nordic Museum in Stockholmand the Austrian Museum of Folklore in Vienna. The permanent exhibition of the museum also houses the Carrettu sicilianu - a very famous Sicilian cart brought back by Wilhelm II from one of his trips.In 1889 Rudolf Virchow founded the folklore museum in Berlin on a private initiative with the “Museum for German Folk Costumes and Domestic Products”. In 1904 the collection was incorporated into the Royal Museums in Berlin, but not as an independent museum, but as the “Royal Collection for German Folklore” of the prehistoric department of the Ethnographic Museum. Until the founding of the “State Museum for German Folklore” in the Association of State Museums in Berlin in 1935, the museum struggled with a considerable shortage of space. In National Socialism era, the museum and its director Konrad Hahm approached the national ideology in order to preserve the institutional quality on the one hand and to have greater resources available on the other. During the Second World War, 80 percent of the historical collection was lost.

Die Sonderausstellung Murcia: Im Garten Europas ist modern und ansprechend gestaltet. Eine Vielfalt der eingesetzten Medien (Karten, Bilder, Videos und natürlich Exponate) erlauben einen breiten Zugang zum Thema. Gelungen finde ich auch, dass es die Menschen aus der Region sind, die zu Wort kommen, statt das über die Menschen gesprochen wird. Die Ausstellung ist auch nicht wertend, sondern erlaubt dem Besucher einen umfassenden Blick auf die Region. Der Eintrittspreis von vier Euro (ermäßigt) und acht Euro (voll) ist angemessen, wobei die Dauerausstellung als solche weniger anregend ist. Sie wirkt in die Jahre gekommen und repräsentiert nicht mehr Europa, wie es aus heutiger Sicht gelebt und verstanden wird. Die Anordnung nach Themen gefällt mir zwar grundsätzlich, aber es bräuchte bei den Exponaten dringend eine Erneuerung, um einerseits den Anforderungen des heutigen Museumsbesuchers an Interaktivität gerecht zu werden und anderseits die aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen zu reflektieren. Nichtsdestotrotz lohnt sich ein kurzer Gang durch die Ausstellung, um allerlei skurriles und besonders zu sehen. Das Personal ist in der überwiegenden Mehrheit freundlich gewesen. Fazit: Für die aktuellen Sonderausstellung ist dieses Museum eher ein Besuch wert als für die Dauerausstellung, welche einer Neuausrichtung bedarf.
